Use
The 11-Deoxycortisol Quantitative test by HPLC-MS/MS is used to measure the concentration of deoxycortisol in serum or plasma. It is utilized in the assessment of adrenal gland function and may be used to differentiate between various forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) as part of a metyrapone stimulation test. Monitoring the levels of 11-deoxycortisol is critical in determining the enzyme deficiencies and in evaluating the response to treatment in patients with suspected adrenal pathologies.
Special Instructions
The test requires patient samples to be collected in a serum separator tube or other acceptable tubes like plain red, pink (K2EDTA), plasma separator tube, or green (sodium or lithium heparin). Samples should be processed by transferring 1 mL of serum or plasma to an ARUP standard transport tube with a minimum volume of 0.3 mL.
Limitations
Results may vary based on the patient's adrenal function, and external factors such as medication use or improper sample handling may impact the test outcome. Stability limitations require that separated samples must not be kept at ambient temperature, and they have specific refrigerated (1 week) and frozen (6 months) stability conditions. Grossly hemolyzed specimens are unacceptable for analysis.
