Use
This test aids in the initial diagnosis of connective tissue disease. Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) are associated with a variety of diseases, such as systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARD), cancers, autoimmune, infectious, and inflammatory conditions. The presence of ANA is a hallmark feature of SARD, although its lack of diagnostic specificity requires confirmation of positive results by more specific serologic tests.
Special Instructions
If ANA is detected by ELISA, additional testing will be performed via indirect fluorescent assay (IFA) using HEp-2 substrate with IgG-specific conjugate. Additional charges apply for the reflex test.
Limitations
ANA by ELISA has been reported to have lower sensitivities compared to ANA IFA for SARD. Negative results do not necessarily rule out the presence of systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
