Anti-Nuclear Antibodies by Indirect Fluorescent Antibody (IFA) (RDL)

Use
ANA are commonly found in a variety of autoimmune diseases. Antibody frequency increases with age in apparently healthy people. ANA patterns on Hep-2 slides provide only general clues about particles (chromatin, nucleosomes, and spliceosomes). ANA pattern (other than centromere pattern) are not reliably correlated with the presence of specific antibodies and must be further evaluated by EIA using individual ENA antigens.
Special Instructions
Separate serum from cells within one hour of collection. Transfer to a plastic transport tube before shipping. To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.
Limitations
ANA patterns other than centromere pattern are not reliably correlated with the presence of specific antibodies and require further evaluation. The test may yield false positive results in certain conditions, and hence additional confirmatory tests may be necessary.
