Differential diagnosis of insulin-dependent diabetes from noninsulin-dependent diabetes
Special Instructions
Maintain serum samples under recommended stability conditions. Ensure samples are not grossly hemolyzed, lipemic, or icteric as this could lead to rejection. The test turnaround time varies from 2 to 7 days depending on the schedule and any additional testing required.
Limitations
The test does not account for non-organ-specific causes of diabetes and is specifically aimed at diagnosing the immune-mediated form of insulin-dependent diabetes. False negatives may occur in cases where antibody production is very low or begins after testing. False positives might occur in autoimmune conditions other than Type 1 diabetes where similar antibodies can be present. Test results should always be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and other laboratory results to confirm diagnosis.
