Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disease that predominantly affects the optic nerve and spinal cord and presents with optic neuritis and myelitis. NMO spectrum disorders (NMOSD) include isolated optic neuritis, brainstem encephalitis, and longitudinal extensive transverse myelitis. The presence of antibodies against aquaporin‑4 (AQP4) in cerebrospinal fluid supports a diagnosis of NMO/NMOSD and assists in distinguishing it from multiple sclerosis.
