Use
The Dengue Fever Virus Antibody, IgM test is used to diagnose dengue fever during the acute phase of the disease, generally more than five days after the onset of symptoms. This test may also be useful in conjunction with other arthropod-borne virus tests for individuals with similar symptoms based on clinical presentation and travel history, providing evidence of current or recent infection through the detection of IgM antibodies.
Special Instructions
Parallel testing is preferred when convalescent specimens are received within 30 days of the acute specimens. It is crucial to mark the specimen plainly as 'acute' or 'convalescent'.
Limitations
Low levels of IgM antibodies may persist for more than 12 months post-infection, potentially affecting the test's ability to distinguish current from past infections. The most reliable evidence of current infection is a significant change observed in two appropriately timed specimens tested in the same laboratory at the same time.
