Used as an aid in the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in conjunction with other laboratory and clinical findings.
Special Instructions
This test includes a reflex to titer if the initial result is positive, which helps gauge the antibody concentration against dsDNA for better diagnostic accuracy.
Limitations
Some drugs, including procainamide and hydralazine, can induce a lupus erythematosus-like disease. Patients experiencing drug-induced lupus erythematosus may exhibit antinuclear antibodies (ANA) typically directed against nuclear histones, though antibodies to dsDNA have also been documented. Such factors should be considered when interpreting test results, as they may affect the specificity of the diagnosis of SLE based on dsDNA antibody presence.
