Use
The Serotonin Release Assay (SRA) is the gold standard test for diagnosing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). It assesses the presence of heparin-dependent platelet activating antibodies, which cause the release of serotonin from platelets in the presence of heparin, thus aiding in the confirmation and exclusion of HIT. The assay is crucial for patients suspected of having HIT to ensure proper diagnosis and management, as false positives can have significant clinical implications. The test is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes.
Special Instructions
This test is New York state approved and is performed between Monday to Saturday with results reported in 2-4 days. The test is developed and performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. A positive result indicates a serotonin release of greater than 20% with low-dose heparin and less than 20% with high-dose heparin. Clinical information and other laboratory results are recommended for correlation.
Limitations
The Serotonin Release Assay has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Non-heparin-dependent antibodies, such as HLA antibodies, may cause indeterminate results. Indeterminate results are not consistent with a diagnosis of HIT, but they do not completely exclude the possibility of HIT. It is recommended to interpret results in conjunction with clinical findings and additional laboratory testing. The test's performance and characteristics are specific to ARUP Laboratories.
