Allergen, Food, Alpha-Gal (galactose-alpha-1,3-galatose) Panel
Also known as: ALPHAGALPN
Use
This test is used to evaluate patients for sensitization to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (Alpha-Gal), which can trigger allergic reactions, particularly delayed anaphylaxis, following consumption of mammalian meats. The presence of allergen-specific IgE to Alpha-Gal indicates sensitization, which, in correlation with the patient's clinical history and in vivo reactivity, can support the diagnosis of an alpha-gal syndrome. The test helps guide dietary management and identify patients at risk for reactions to red meat and byproducts.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided for accurate results. Serum should be immediately separated from cells and transported in an ARUP standard transport tube. Accurate differentiation requires adherence to collection and transportation protocols as specified by ARUP's guidelines.
Limitations
Detection of allergen-specific IgE does not always predict in vivo reactivity and cannot determine the exact degree of clinical response. Results should be integrated with clinical history and other findings for diagnosis, and a negative result does not necessarily rule out the possibility of a clinical allergy or anaphylaxis. Specificity and sensitivity of the test may vary, and cross-reactivity with other allergens is possible. The test results should be used in conjunction with specialist advice for interpretation.
