Allergen, Food, Shrimp
Also known as: SHRIMP
Use
The Allergen, Food, Shrimp test quantitatively assesses the level of allergen-specific IgE antibodies against shrimp. This test is clinically significant for evaluating allergic reactions to shrimp, useful in diagnosing and managing patients with potential shrimp allergies. IgE levels, when corroborated with clinical signs and patient history, aid specialists in determining an allergy's presence and potential severity.
Special Instructions
For accurate results, it is advised that multiple patient encounters should be avoided prior to specimen collection. The serum must be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. The minimum volume requirement for testing is 0.25 mL but 0.5 mL is preferred. Hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic samples are unacceptable.
Limitations
Although increasing IgE levels indicate increased concentrations of allergen-specific antibodies, they may not directly correlate with the severity of clinical reactions. The correlation of laboratory results with clinical history is necessary due to variability in individual response and potential cross-reactivity. Negative results do not definitively rule out an allergy or anaphylactic potential.
