Allergen, Fungi and Molds, Aspergillus fumigatus
Also known as: ASP RAST
Use
The test measures the concentration of allergen-specific IgE antibodies to Aspergillus fumigatus. These concentrations aid in determining the probability of an IgE-mediated clinical reaction to this mold allergen. The results are crucial for evaluating patients with suspected or known mold allergies. Increasing IgE concentrations are generally reflective of increasing allergen sensitization, but results must be correlated with the patient's clinical history and observed clinical response.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided to ensure accurate test results. It is essential to follow the specimen collection instructions to secure an adequate volume for allergen testing. The separation of serum from cells should occur as soon as possible, or within 2 hours of collection.
Limitations
Allergen results within the range of 0.10-0.34 kU/L have undetermined clinical relevance and are intended for specialist interpretation. The concentrations of allergen-specific IgE detected may not always correlate with skin test results or the degree of clinical response to allergen exposure. A negative test result does not rule out the possibility of clinical allergy or even anaphylaxis, emphasizing the need to correlate results with clinical history.
