Alpha-1-Fetoprotein (AFP) by Immunohistochemistry
Also known as: AFP IHC
Use
This immunohistochemical stain is used to detect Alpha‑1‑Fetoprotein (AFP), a tumor‑associated embryonal antigen commonly expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma, yolk sac tumors, and certain germ cell tumors. The stain is interpreted on formalin‑fixed, paraffin‑embedded tissue or cellblock specimens, aiding in diagnostic evaluation of neoplastic tissue by visualizing AFP protein expression via immunohistochemistry.
Special Instructions
This test is performed as a stain‑and‑return (technical) service only. Ordering is recommended via electronic request; if not available, the ARUP Immunohistochemistry Stain Form #32978 should be used along with an ARUP client number. Refer to the ARUP Immunohistochemistry Stain Offerings brochure for additional ordering guidance.
Limitations
Requires tissue or cellblock specimens formalin‑fixed and paraffin‑embedded; specimens must be representative and not depleted. Slides must be positively charged, 3‑ to 5‑micron thick (minimum 2 slides), and not oven‑baked if precut. Frozen specimens are unacceptable. Slides or blocks must be protected from excessive heat. Transport during summer should use cooling containers. The stain reflects AFP protein presence and does not measure serum levels or other analytes.
