Anti-sp100 Antibody, IgG
Also known as: SP100 AB
Use
Anti-sp100 IgG antibodies are used in the evaluation of individuals with suspected primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), particularly in cases where the patients test negative for anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA). These antibodies are of diagnostic relevance due to their relatively low sensitivity but excellent specificity for PBC. Despite this, a negative result does not rule out the disease, highlighting the antibodies' role in identifying a subset of patients with PBC who are AMA-negative.
Special Instructions
Serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. It is important to transfer the serum to an ARUP standard transport tube to ensure the sample's integrity. The test is New York state approved, which may be relevant for ordering practices in this jurisdiction.
Limitations
The Anti-sp100 Antibody, IgG test possesses low sensitivity, which means it may not detect all cases of PBC, particularly in patients without anti-sp100 antibodies. However, the specificity is high, indicating that positive results are strongly indicative of PBC. The test cannot replace AMA testing but complements it by assisting in diagnosing AMA-negative patients. Correct interpretation requires consideration of clinical findings and other diagnostic tests.
