Fungal Antibodies with Reflex to Blastomyces dermatitidis Antibodies by Immunodiffusion, Serum
Also known as: FUNG R SER
Use
This test is used for the detection of antibodies to several fungal organisms including Aspergillus, Coccidioides, Histoplasma, and Blastomyces. It can help in determining past or current infections through complement fixation and immunoassays. While not recommended for definitive diagnosis of fungal infection, it provides valuable information on immune response to these fungi, which is useful in assessing patient exposure and monitoring the disease progression.
Special Instructions
If Blastomyces antibodies are equivocal or positive by immunoassay, the test will reflex to Blastomyces dermatitidis Antibodies by Immunodiffusion, incurring additional charges.
Limitations
While the test aids in detecting antibody presence, it is not definitive for diagnosing active fungal infections. Cross-reactions can occur, especially at lower titers, with other fungal diseases. Results can suggest past exposure or current infection but are not exclusively indicative of an active infection, as roughly 30% of chronic residual pulmonary cases may not show antibodies on complement fixation tests.
