Giardia Antigen by EIA
Also known as: GLAM
Use
The Giardia Antigen by Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) is used for the qualitative detection of Giardia duodenalis (also known as Giardia lamblia or Giardia intestinalis) antigens in stool samples. This test is an important diagnostic tool for identifying Giardia infections in patients experiencing persistent diarrhea lasting more than 14 days, or those with known risk factors for this parasitic infection. Accurate detection of Giardia helps in the timely initiation of appropriate treatment and in managing and controlling outbreaks of giardiasis.
Special Instructions
The test can be ordered when persistent diarrhea suggests a Giardia infection, particularly if other risk factors are present. Specimens must be handled carefully to ensure accurate results. The collection requires transportation in an unpreserved stool transport vial or preservation within an hour in 10 percent formalin, making logistical coordination essential.
Limitations
The test has limitations including the fact that it is qualitative and not quantitative. Cross-reactivity with other intestinal antigens can occur, leading to potential false-positive results. Intermittent shedding of antigens by Giardia can result in false negatives if not enough antigen is present in the stool sample being tested. Proper specimen collection and handling is vital to minimize these issues.
