Giardia lamblia, EIA and Ova and Parasites Examination
Also known as: Stool for Ova and Parasites Including EIA for Giardia
Use
Rapid detection of Giardia lamblia; establish the diagnosis of parasitic infection
Special Instructions
Ensure the test request form indicates a special request if testing for Cyclospora species or Cryptosporidium species is required. It is recommended to submit three separate stool samples collected over five to six days to optimize results. Specimens should ideally be collected before starting antidiarrheal or antiparasitic therapy.
Limitations
This test does not include detection for Pneumocystis carinii, Trichomonas vaginalis, Cryptosporidium, Microsporidium, or Cyclospora. For optimal detection of Giardia lamblia and other common parasites, specimens should be collected and submitted following specific guidelines. Specimens collected too soon after barium or laxative administration may be unsuitable for testing. Immunocompromised patients or those with persistent symptoms may require additional tests to rule out less common pathogens.
