Growth Hormone, 60 Minutes
Also known as: GH 60
Use
The Growth Hormone, 60 Minutes test is used for the evaluation of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) and acromegaly in both pediatric and adult patients. In pediatric patients, very low peak growth hormone concentrations on stimulation testing are indicative of severe GHD. For adults, expected peak GH concentrations vary based on the specific stimulation test administered, as guided by endocrinology guidelines. The test also aids in suppression testing, where healthy individuals show GH concentrations of less than 1 ng/mL upon glucose intake, while patients with acromegaly do not exhibit normal suppression.
Special Instructions
The test is standardized to the Recombinant Second International Standard (IS): 98/574, which results in GH readings approximately 25% lower than previous standards. Reference ranges have been modified accordingly. Specimen should be clotted completely at room temperature before separation and transport.
Limitations
Thresholds to differentiate normal from partial GHD have not been well established. Diagnosis of GHD requires inadequate response to two separate provocative tests.
