Growth Hormone
Also known as: Human Growth Hormone (hGH)
Use
Pituitary function test useful in the diagnosis of hypothalamic disorder, hypopituitarism, acromegaly, and ectopic growth hormone production by neoplasm
Special Instructions
This test may exhibit interference when the sample is collected from a person consuming high doses of biotin. It is recommended to ask patients about biotin supplementation, as biotin consumption should be stopped at least 72 hours before sample collection.
Limitations
A single fasting growth hormone (GH) level has limited diagnostic value due to episodic and pulsatile secretion. The half-life of GH is approximately 20 to 25 minutes. It's most effective when part of a dynamic test with specific stimuli. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with the patient's clinical presentation. The test cannot be solely relied upon to diagnose growth hormone deficiency or excess without considering other diagnostic procedures or clinical evaluations.
