Growth Hormone, Four Specimens
Use
The Growth Hormone, Four Specimens test, is used to evaluate growth hormone secretion patterns in patients through serial measurements. This test involves collecting multiple specimens over a period of time following administration of a stimulant. The evaluation of growth hormone levels can help diagnose and monitor conditions related to growth hormone deficiency or excess, such as pituitary gland disorders.
Special Instructions
This test requires multiple specimens collected at different time intervals. Administration of a stimulus such as a drug or glucola is necessary after the initial baseline collection. Ensure the clinician's instructions are followed closely to determine when and why the series is ordered. Patients should be asked about biotin supplementation as it may interfere with results; they should stop taking biotin at least 72 hours prior to sample collection.
Limitations
The test may show variability due to physiological fluctuations of growth hormone throughout the day. It may also exhibit interference if the patient has consumed high doses of biotin. It is essential to follow exact specimen collection timing as advised by the ordering clinician to ensure accurate results. Additional confirmatory or reflex tests may be needed based on initial results.
