Insulin, 30 Minutes
Also known as: INSULIN 30
Use
The Insulin, 30 Minutes test is used to measure insulin levels in the blood 30 minutes after glucose ingestion, primarily as part of glucose tolerance testing. It helps in assessing insulin production and action, which can be critical in diagnosing and monitoring conditions like diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance. This test provides valuable information about how the body responds to glucose and can support decisions regarding treatment and lifestyle adjustments for managing metabolic disorders.
Special Instructions
Ensure specimen is allowed to clot completely at room temperature before separation. After collection, serum must be transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube within 2 hours. The test may cross-react with analogs like insulin aspart, insulin glargine, and insulin lispro, with insulin detemir showing about 50% cross-reactivity.
Limitations
Insulin, 30 Minutes may exhibit cross-reactivity with certain insulin analogs, such as insulin aspart, glargine, and lispro. Insulin detemir exhibits approximately 50 percent cross-reactivity, while insulin glulisine shows minimal reactivity. These factors can affect interpretability in contexts involving these analogs. Hemolyzed specimens and certain blood tube additives like heparinized plasma can adversely affect results.
