Insulin, Four Specimens
Use
The Insulin, Four Specimens test is used to monitor insulin levels over multiple time intervals. It involves collecting multiple blood samples from the patient, starting with a baseline sample, followed by treatment with a drug or other treatment (such as glucose administration), and then collecting additional samples at specified time intervals. This test is often used for assessing insulin secretion dynamics in response to a treatment stimulus, providing valuable insights into the patient's insulin regulation and potential metabolic disorders.
Special Instructions
The test requires a series of blood samples collected at multiple time points. The patient should not be given the test panel if a pill, shot, or treatment is not planned after the initial sample draw. Clinicians should be consulted to determine the need for the series panel. Patients consuming biotin supplements should stop intake at least 72 hours prior to sample collection to avoid test interference.
Limitations
The test may show interference if the patient is consuming high levels of biotin, a supplement also known as vitamin B7 or B8. Patients should be asked about biotin intake and advised to cease consumption prior to testing. Additionally, laboratory testing may involve variable schedules and additional time may be necessary for confirmatory tests. Specifications on routine intervals for specimen collection are required to ensure consistent and accurate results.
