Luteinizing Hormone and Follicle Stimulating Hormone
Also known as: LH/FSH
Use
The Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test measures the levels of these pituitary gonadotropins in the blood, which are essential for evaluating reproductive health. LH and FSH are key hormones regulating the reproductive system in both males and females. In women, they control the menstrual cycle and play a role in the development of eggs in the ovaries. In men, LH stimulates the production of testosterone, and FSH is involved in the production of sperm. This test is used in the diagnosis and management of various conditions such as infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hypothalamic or pituitary disorders, and to evaluate the onset of menopause or puberty.
Special Instructions
New York state approved.
Limitations
The LH/FSH test may have limited sensitivity in distinguishing between primary ovarian or testicular failure and secondary (hypothalamic or pituitary) failure when only mild abnormalities are present. Hormone levels can be influenced by certain medications, health conditions, and in females by the menstrual cycle and pregnancy status, potentially leading to variable results. Moreover, the electrochemiluminescent immunoassay method used may be susceptible to interference from heterophile antibodies.
