PCCA/ANNA by IFA with Reflex to Titer and Immunoblot
Also known as: PCCA/ANNA
Use
This test aids in the diagnosis of paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes (PNDS) associated with malignancy. It serves to distinguish between PNDS and other inflammatory disorders of the nervous system by detecting Purkinje cell cytoplasmic and neuronal nuclear antibodies. These antibodies can be associated with various cancers such as small-cell lung cancer, neuroblastoma, fallopian tube and breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and Hodgkin's lymphoma. The presence of one or more of these antibodies supports the diagnosis of PNDS and suggests an underlying neoplasm.
Special Instructions
Purkinje cell cytoplasmic antibodies (PCCA) and neuronal nuclear antibodies (ANNA) are screened using indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA). If the screen is indeterminate or positive at 1:10 or greater, additional testing with immunoblot is performed, and reflex titers may be obtained. Additional charges apply for these reflex tests.
Limitations
This test has been developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The test is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes. It is important to note that negative results do not rule out the presence of a PNDS or associated malignancy. Variability in antibody expression over time and differences in antibody detection systems may affect test outcomes.
