Pinworm
Also known as: PINW
Use
The Pinworm test is used to diagnose enterobiasis, an infection caused by the pinworm Enterobius vermicularis. This infection is common, especially in children, and can cause itching around the anus where the worms lay eggs. The test is crucial for diagnosing the infection so that appropriate treatment can be administered to alleviate symptoms and prevent spread.
Special Instructions
Ensure proper collection of the perianal material using the provided paddle (ARUP Supply #58681). This can be ordered online through eSupply or by contacting ARUP Client Services. Specimens must be transported using the specified collection device to maintain integrity.
Limitations
The test may fail to detect the presence of pinworms if the sample collection is not performed properly or if the infestation is at a low level. False negatives can also occur if the worms are not actively laying eggs at the time of collection. The presence of media or preservatives, or using frosted or colored tape, can lead to specimen rejection.
