Pinworm Examination, 2 Specimens
Use
The Pinworm Examination is the recommended test for detection of Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm), especially in individuals (often children) presenting with perineal pruritus. The test uses perianal sampling to detect E. vermicularis eggs, providing accurate diagnosis when pinworm infection is suspected and a visible worm or typical symptoms are present. It is considered the preferred method over an O&P exam for pinworm detection.
Special Instructions
A special collection device called a pinworm paddle is available from Client Supplies for perianal material collection. Alternatively, clear cellulose (tape) applied to a clear glass slide is appropriate for submission. Specimens include two perianal samples collected on separate days or as recommended by the laboratory.
