Potassium, Total, RBC
Also known as: K RBC
Use
Potassium, Total, RBC is used for estimating tissue stores of potassium and may be useful in certain research settings. It helps in understanding the body's potassium balance and might be relevant for clinical situations requiring knowledge about cell potassium concentrations.
Special Instructions
This test is not performed at ARUP; separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. Specimens for elemental testing should be collected in certified metal-free containers to avoid contamination.
Limitations
Elevated results for elemental testing may be caused by environmental contamination at the time of specimen collection. Unacceptable conditions include tubes containing potassium-based preservatives/anticoagulants, which can interfere with the test results. It is recommended that unexpected elevated results be verified by testing another specimen in a trace metal free container to confirm results.
