Prolactin, Dilution Study
Also known as: PROLAC MAC
Use
This test is used for evaluating patients with prolactin-secreting macroadenomas, where a high-dose hook effect is a consideration. It measures the levels of prolactin to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of prolactin-related disorders. High-dose hook effect can lead to falsely low readings, so this test helps in accurately determining prolactin levels in such cases.
Special Instructions
Pregnancy, lactation, and the administration of oral contraceptives can increase prolactin concentrations. Special attention to clinical context and potential medications is advised.
Limitations
This test may not fully resolve prolactin levels in the presence of extremely high concentrations due to the potential for a high-dose hook effect, although it is designed to address this issue. Interpretation should take into account the clinical scenario and other hormonal influences.
