Prolactin, Eight Specimens
Use
The Prolactin, Eight Specimens test is used to measure the levels of prolactin in the blood across multiple samples. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland and plays a role in various physiological processes. This test can be useful in evaluating cases of pituitary disorders, prolactinomas, and differential diagnoses of amenorrhea, galactorrhea, and infertility. Prolonged elevated prolactin levels may indicate pituitary tumor, hypothyroidism, or other conditions affecting the pituitary gland.
Special Instructions
Please refer to the directions for Sequential Sampling. The test involves collecting eight sequential specimens to assess prolactin levels accurately. Ensure adherence to the collection schedule to maintain test integrity.
Limitations
The Prolactin, Eight Specimens test is impacted by factors such as stress, medications, and biological rhythms that can alter prolactin levels. Results should be interpreted in the context of the clinical picture. False elevations might occur due to macroprolactin or during pregnancy and lactation. It is not suitable for patients on certain medications without prior adjustment or consultation.
