Schistosoma Antibody IgG by ELISA
Also known as: SCHISTOIGG
Use
May aid in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis caused by infection with S. mansoni, especially in travelers to endemic areas. The presence of IgG antibodies to Schistosoma may suggest current or past infection. It is important to consider the presence of Schistosoma ova in stool or urine for a comprehensive evaluation.
Special Instructions
It is recommended to repeat testing in 2-4 weeks with a fresh sample if equivocal results are obtained. Gross hemolysis or lipemia, contamination, or heat inactivation of samples are causes for rejection.
Limitations
This test cannot distinguish between current or resolved past infections, and serologic cross-reactivity can occur in individuals with other helminth infections. It should not be used to monitor for cure, as patients may remain seropositive post-treatment or after infection clearance.
