Testosterone, Free and Total, Includes Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (Adult Females, Children, or Individuals on Testosterone-Suppressing Hormone Therapy)
Also known as: TESTOS F&T
Use
This test provides a calculated value for free testosterone concentration using total testosterone measured by mass spectrometry. It may be used to evaluate hyperandrogenism in children and cisgender females, monitor testosterone-suppressing hormone therapies (such as antiandrogens or estrogens), evaluate testosterone status in individuals with protein-binding abnormalities, or evaluate hypogonadism in cisgender males. This test is particularly useful for individuals undergoing testosterone-suppressing treatments or those with conditions affecting testosterone levels.
Special Instructions
Collect blood samples between 6-10 a.m. for optimal results. The test requires separation of serum from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. It involves transferring 1 mL of serum or plasma to an ARUP standard transport tube. Unacceptable specimen conditions include EDTA plasma.
Limitations
The concentration of free testosterone is derived from a mathematical expression based on the constant for the binding of testosterone to sex hormone binding globulin. The test may not be suitable for individuals with severe protein-binding anomalies that affect testosterone binding.
