Use
This test calculates free and bioavailable testosterone along with total testosterone using mass spectrometry and mathematical formulas. Free testosterone and bioavailable testosterone are estimated using established equations (Vermeulen and Södergård) from measurements of total testosterone, SHBG, and albumin; useful when direct equilibrium dialysis is unavailable or total testosterone is near threshold. It aids in evaluation of hypogonadism and related endocrine disorders.

Limitations
This assay is a calculated test (not direct measurement) using the Vermeulen and Södergård equations, and is not FDA-cleared or approved. It has been analytically validated under CLIA and intended for clinical purposes only. Direct measurement by equilibrium dialysis (test code 36170) is preferred when precise free testosterone assessment is critical.
