Ziprasidone Quantitation, Serum or Plasma
Also known as: ZIPRA SP
Use
This test is used to optimize drug therapy and monitor patient adherence. It measures the concentration of the drug Ziprasidone in the serum or plasma to ensure that therapeutic levels are achieved and maintained. Ziprasidone is an antipsychotic medication used in the management of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Therapeutic Drug Monitoring involves measuring drug levels to ensure efficacy while minimizing side effects, making it a critical component in personalized healthcare.
Special Instructions
This test is not performed at ARUP Laboratories, and separate specimens must be submitted if multiple tests are ordered on the same sample. Compliance with collection and handling instructions is crucial to ensure accurate test results. Specimen should be refrigerated during transport, although room temperature or frozen conditions are also acceptable.
Limitations
The stability of Ziprasidone in serum or plasma samples is limited; thus, the reported concentration might be lower than the actual concentration at the time of collection. Use caution when interpreting results. This test is developed and its performance characteristics have been determined by NMS Labs, and it has not been cleared or approved by the US FDA. This means that while the test is reliable within specified conditions, it is considered a laboratory-developed test (LDT) and unapproved by the FDA.
