Special Instructions
Timing of specimen collection should be a pre-dose (trough) draw when the patient is at steady state concentration. The specimen should be collected in a plain red tube or a lavender/pink tube containing K2 or K3 EDTA. Serum or plasma must be separated from cells within 2 hours of collection and transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. Minimum volume required is 0.5 mL. Transport and store specimens refrigerated.
Limitations
The therapeutic range for zonisamide is not well established, making it imperative to correlate test results with clinical findings. Toxic concentrations exceeding 80 µg/mL can lead to severe conditions such as coma, seizures, and cardiac anomalies. Additionally, factors such as other medications and renal function can significantly influence zonisamide levels, necessitating careful interpretation of test outcomes in certain patient scenarios.
