Galleri® multi-cancer early detection test
Use
The Galleri® multi-cancer early detection test is designed to detect over 50 types of cancer through a simple blood draw, allowing for the identification of cancers at an early stage when treatment is more likely to be effective and potentially curative. It is particularly sensitive to detecting deadly cancers that are often diagnosed late, such as pancreatic, liver, and ovarian cancers. The test is recommended for adults at elevated risk of cancer, especially those aged 50 and older, and is meant to be used alongside other routine cancer screenings.
Special Instructions
The Galleri test is available by prescription only and is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment. It is meant to complement routine cancer screening tests as advised by healthcare providers.
Limitations
The test cannot detect all cancers, and false positives or negatives are possible. It does not diagnose cancer but signals if cancer is likely by analyzing blood for DNA fragments originating from cancer cells. A positive test result requires follow-up diagnostic testing according to medical protocols to confirm cancer. A negative result does not completely rule out the presence of cancer.
