Acid-fast (Mycobacteria) Antibiotic Susceptibilities
Also known as: AFB Susceptibility Testing, Rapid-grower Susceptibility Testing, Susceptibility Testing, AFB, TB Susceptibility Testing
Use
Determine the susceptibility of the isolated organism to a profile of antimycobacterial agents
Special Instructions
Culture must be packaged as a special etiologic agent for shipment to LabCorp. Organism identification is required prior to susceptibility testing and will incur an additional charge if not previously performed.
Limitations
The primary limitation of this test is that susceptibilities cannot be reported if the organism fails to grow on the test media. Additionally, the test should ideally be performed on the first organism isolated from a patient. Repeat testing may be necessary if the patient remains symptomatic or culture positive after several months of treatment. Accurate susceptibility testing depends upon proper organism identification before testing begins.
