Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis, Real-time DNA PCR
Also known as: B pertussis and B parapertussis, DNA PCR (Real-time), Whooping Cough
Use
This assay is intended to be used as an aid to the diagnosis of Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough) and Bordetella parapertussis (whooping cough-like syndrome).
Special Instructions
The preferred specimen is a flocked nasopharyngeal swab submitted in a plastic transport sleeve, but alternate specimens such as a NP swab in charcoal, NP/throat swab in universal transport media, or NP wash/aspirate in a sterile container are also accepted. Ensure that swabs in UTM and NP aspirates/washes are frozen if not tested immediately, and avoid freezing dry or charcoal swabs.
Limitations
The test may yield false-positive results for Bordetella pertussis DNA if Bordetella holmesii is present in the sample, as the target region, IS481, is shared by both organisms. Results must therefore be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and other laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis. The test is not FDA cleared or approved, which may restrict its use in certain clinical situations.
