BP180 and BP230 (Bullous Pemphigoid), IgG Antibodies
Use
This test is a preferred screening method for diagnosing patients suspected to have bullous pemphigoid and related conditions. It detects circulating IgG antibodies that target specific proteins at the dermal-epidermal junction, including BP180 and BP230. These proteins play essential roles in maintaining skin structure, and their targeting by autoantibodies results in blister formation typical of pemphigoid diseases. Monitoring antibody levels can also help evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions aimed at managing these conditions.
Special Instructions
The test evaluates the presence of IgG autoantibodies targeting BP180 and BP230, proper sample handling is crucial to avoid results compromise. Serum should be frozen at -20°C and not repeatedly thawed and refrozen. The test has a turnaround time of approximately 5 days, but additional confirmatory tests may lead to increased response times.
Limitations
The test may yield false-negative results if antibody levels are below the detection threshold or if there is insufficient sample volume. Cross-reactions with other proteins that are not related to bullous pemphigoid might occur, affecting test specificity. Incorrect sample handling, such as bacterial contamination or hemolysis, can lead to sample rejection and unsuccessful testing.
