Codeine and Metabolite
Use
Half-life of elimination: approximately three hours. Time to peak, serum: one hour.
Special Instructions
Separate serum or plasma within one hour of collection and transfer to a plastic transport tube. Do not use a gel-barrier tube as it may absorb the drug, affecting the results.
Limitations
Opioid substances, including codeine and its derivatives, can cause sedation, euphoria, and other effects that lead to a high potential for abuse, tolerance, and dependence. This test's accuracy can be compromised by the use of gel-barrier tubes, which may significantly slow drug absorption. Clinical context is needed to interpret results as levels may be influenced by various factors, including metabolism, dosage, and time of last dose.
