Complete Blood Count (CBC) Without Differential
Also known as: Hemogram
Use
See comments in Complete Blood Count (CBC) With Differential [005009].
Special Instructions
The test results are typically available within 1 day of specimen pickup. The specimen must be maintained at room temperature after being collected in a lavender-top EDTA tube. Ensure to invert the tube 8 to 10 times immediately after collection to mix the blood with the anticoagulant, and fill the tube to capacity to avoid rejection.
Limitations
The CBC Without Differential does not provide specific white blood cell subtype counts, which may be necessary for diagnosing certain conditions. Hemolysis, clotted specimens, or incorrect volume in tubes can affect results and lead to rejection. The test requires whole blood collected in EDTA, and samples must not be frozen as this destabilizes the specimen, making it unusable for accurate measurements.
