Hornet, Yellow
Also known as: Venom, Yellow Hornet
Use
The Yellow Hornet test measures specific IgE levels to detect hypersensitivity to yellow hornet venom. It is useful for diagnosing allergies and managing patients with symptoms such as anaphylaxis or other allergic reactions following exposure to hornet stings. Identifying specific allergens aids in the development of an effective treatment plan, which may include venom immunotherapy.
Special Instructions
Collect serum using a red-top or gel-barrier tube. Ensure specimen stability by adhering to the recommended temperature requirements during storage and transport. Allow adequate time for confirmatory or reflex tests, especially in cases where allergy levels need additional evaluation.
Limitations
The test may have limitations in terms of sensitivity, especially in individuals with ongoing immunotherapy or those who have not mounted a sufficient IgE response. Cross-reactivity with other similar venoms or allergens can affect specificity. Interpretation should consider the clinical context and patient history, as low IgE levels do not exclude allergy. Variability in results may occur due to biological factors and specimen handling.
