Allergen, Insects and Venom, Yellow-Faced Hornet
Also known as: HORNET YF
Use
The Allergen, Insects and Venom, Yellow-Faced Hornet test is designed to quantitatively measure allergen-specific IgE levels against the yellow-faced hornet (Dolichovespula arenaria) to determine the likelihood of IgE-mediated allergic reactions. Patients with exposure to this insect and symptoms suggestive of hypersensitivity can be assessed using this test. It is important for correlating laboratory results with clinical history and in vivo reactivity to specific allergens, aiding clinicians in identifying potential allergens responsible for symptoms. However, laboratory values may not always correlate with the degree of clinical response or in vivo challenges.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided to ensure the accuracy of allergen testing. Serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer the sample into an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. Contact ARUP if ordering multiple allergens for detailed specimen collection instructions.
Limitations
The test measures increasing concentrations of allergen-specific IgE, reflecting the likelihood of clinical reactions to the hornet venom. However, IgE concentrations may not correlate with the severity of a clinical response or with skin testing results when challenged with the allergen. A negative test does not rule out clinical allergy or anaphylaxis. Testing results of 0.10-0.34 kU/L indicate clinical relevance that is still undetermined and requires specialist interpretation.
