Malt
Use
The Malt test is used to measure the levels of specific IgE antibodies to malt. Elevated levels of IgE antibodies may indicate an allergic reaction to malt, which could assist in diagnosing malt allergy in patients exhibiting symptoms of allergic reactions such as hives, asthma, or anaphylaxis upon exposure to malt-containing substances or environments.
Special Instructions
Ensure that the specimen is collected in a red-top tube or gel-barrier tube, with a minimum volume of 0.2 mL. Stability of the specimen should be maintained at room temperature or refrigerated for up to 14 days. Up to three freeze/thaw cycles are acceptable.
Limitations
This test specifically measures IgE antibodies to malt and may not provide a comprehensive assessment of all potential allergens or sensitivities in the patient. Cross-reactivity with other allergens may occur. False positives or negatives can result from recent exposure to malt or other allergens, as well as varying individual thresholds for IgE antibody production.
