Manganese, Whole Blood
Also known as: Mn, Blood
Use
Monitor manganese exposure
Special Instructions
Ensure the specimen is collected in a royal blue-top (EDTA) tube and submit in the original unopened tube. The specimen should be maintained at room temperature, and a submission of a royal blue-top tube is mandatory.
Limitations
Manganese levels in serum may return to normal levels even if neurological damage from exposure has occurred. Interpretation of the test can be challenging in the case of possible deficiency states, as the human deficiency syndrome related to manganese is poorly defined. Levels may be reduced in epilepsy cases and increased in patients with hepatitis or jaundice. Hemodialysis patients often exhibit manganese levels 60% lower than normal.
