Metabolic Panel (8), Basic
Also known as: Basic Metabolic Panel
Use
The Basic Metabolic Panel (8) is a common test that provides important information about the current status of a person's kidney function, electrolyte balance, and blood sugar levels. It can help diagnose various conditions such as kidney disease, dehydration, and issues related to metabolic and electrolyte imbalances. The test measures analytes including glucose, calcium, and various electrolytes, which are critical for maintaining homeostatic body functions.
Special Instructions
Patient should fast for 12 hours preceding collection of specimen. Use a gel-barrier, red-top, or green-top tube for collection. Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma promptly to ensure accurate results.
Limitations
The Basic Metabolic Panel does not provide information about liver function or blood cell counts, which would require other specific tests. Results can be affected by improper handling, storage, and non-fasting status. Consider variables such as time of specimen collection and patient's physiological condition when interpreting results. It is crucial to evaluate results along with clinical findings and other diagnostic tests for a comprehensive assessment.
