Also known as: Insulin Resistance Syndrome, Reaven's Syndrome, Syndrome X
Use
Identify individuals with metabolic syndrome. The National Cholesterol Education Program, Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines indicate that metabolic syndrome is present in patients with any three of the following five symptoms:
Special Instructions
Waist circumference measurement and blood pressure are required for a complete assessment of metabolic syndrome, as per ATP-III guidelines.
Limitations
The profile should not be performed on patients who have suffered a myocardial infarction or similar traumatic episodes, including acute infection or inflammation, in the preceding three months. In certain cases, additional confirmatory or reflex testing may extend the turnaround time.

Patient Preparation
