Organism Identification, Anaerobic Bacteria
Also known as: Culture Identification Only, Identification Only, Bacteria
Use
Identify anaerobic pathogenic organisms; when actinomycetes are suspected, a specific request must be made.
Special Instructions
Specimen labeling is required and any special identification instructions should be included. The sample must be packed in 'etiologic agent' materials. The test will identify anaerobic or microaerophilic bacteria to genus or species level and requires a pure isolate of anaerobic organisms.
Limitations
Possible limitations of this test include the necessity for a pure culture for accurate identification. Contamination with mixed cultures may lead to rejection of the specimen. The test also requires that a viable colony of the organism is sent, and any discrepancies between the specimen label and the request form may result in specimen rejection. Additionally, some organisms may require additional reflexive testing for complete identification, potentially increasing turnaround time.
