Prealbumin
Also known as: Transthyretin
Use
Evaluate protein malnutrition, total parenteral nutrition, and liver dysfunction. Values are decreased in inflammatory processes, malignancy, protein malnutrition, and protein wasting diseases of the gut or kidney. Values are increased in Hodgkin's disease.
Special Instructions
Test utilizes a red-top or gel-barrier tube for specimen collection, ensuring adequate serum volume for analysis. Stability of the serum specimen is well-maintained at room temperature, refrigerated, or frozen conditions for up to 14 days.
Limitations
As with many laboratory tests, prealbumin levels may be influenced by various physiological and pathological conditions, which could potentially affect the accuracy of the results. Values alone may not provide a definitive diagnosis and should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory findings.
