Renal Function Panel
Use
The Renal Function Panel is used to assess the overall health of kidneys by measuring levels of various substances in the blood. This panel helps diagnose kidney-related disorders, monitor individuals with kidney disease, or detect complications associated with conditions such as diabetes and hypertension that affect kidney health. By evaluating substances such as electrolytes, proteins, and waste products, this test provides crucial information needed for the treatment and management of kidney ailments.
Special Instructions
Patients should fast overnight, ideally for 12 hours, but 8 hours is acceptable, prior to specimen collection. Use a gel-barrier tube for collection of serum or plasma, although red-top or green-top (heparin) tubes are also acceptable. It is essential to separate serum or plasma from cells within 45 minutes of collection to ensure sample integrity.
Limitations
This panel does not provide specific information about the disease state, severity, or exact cause of kidney damage or dysfunction. False elevations or depressions in analyte levels can occur due to pre-analytical variables such as improper specimen handling or processing delays. Results should be correlated with clinical findings and history. Additional tests may be necessary to further evaluate abnormal results detected in this panel, as severe imbalances in electrolyte levels or protein levels may require confirmatory or reflex testing.
