Felbamate
Also known as: Felbatol®
Use
Felbamate is a therapeutic drug monitoring assay used to measure serum concentrations of the anticonvulsant drug felbamate, assisting clinicians in dose adjustment, assessing patient compliance, and avoiding toxic levels. The test supports monitoring in conditions such as partial seizures (with or without secondary generalization) in persons aged 14 years and older and Lennox–Gastaut syndrome in children aged 2 years and older. Optimal serum concentrations typically range between 30–80 µg/mL, with toxicity more likely above 100 µg/mL. Interactions with drugs like phenytoin, valproic acid, and carbamazepine may affect felbamate levels, requiring careful monitoring. Clinical and laboratory surveillance is essential during therapy due to risks such as aplastic anemia and hepatic failure. ([Mayo Clinic Laboratories], [StatPearls])
