Micronutrient, Mercury, Blood
Use
Mercury, a highly toxic metal, is present in select industrial environments and in contaminated ocean fish. Measurement of blood mercury levels provides clinical information on exposure to organic mercury, which is primarily tested in whole blood. This test informs healthcare providers about possible toxic exposure and supports clinical decision-making regarding environmental/occupational risks and dietary counseling.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
Tests performed on a specimen submitted in non‑trace element tube or non acid‑washed/non‑metal‑free container may not accurately reflect the patient's mercury level; such specimens may be accepted but elevated results are reported with a recommendation to re‑submit in proper trace element container. Specimens that are clotted are rejected.
